"Throughout the festival, the students will be supported and mentored by senior experts in community arts and applied theatre, with opportunities for reflection and feedback on their practices. The festival also brings together artists from across the world, giving the students the chance to build international connections, learn from varied perspectives, and deepen their understanding of how community arts is created in different cultural contexts"
~ Dr. Kirsten Sadeghi-Yekta
We are 10 UVic Theatre students (ranging from 2nd years to Master's students) who are attending the International Community Arts festival (ICAF) in the Netherlands this March 2026. This festival brings together artists and educators from around the world who use theatre and the arts as tools for community building, education, and social change. Our group is passionate about learning how alternative theatrical approaches can engage communities, address social inequities, and amplify marginalized voices.
By attending this festival we will have the opportunity to learn directly from global practitioners who work with diverse communities, immerse ourselves in a wide range of artistic practices, develop skills in international ethics, cultural awareness, mindfulness, and translation, and bring our learning back to Victoria and Canadian communities to enrich local arts, education, and community initiatives. As current students, we are self-funding this educational opportunity. To help offset the cost of accommodation during the festival, we are hosting an online fundraising auction and are hoping to raise $3,500. Thank you for your support!
